Mellon Arena – The Civic Arena was a beloved historical landmark in the city of Pittsburgh. The multipurpose indoor arena was an engineering marvel for its time and was constructed in 1961 for use by the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.  It was the first retractable roof for any major sports venue in the world, however it was rarely opened to the public.  The Civic Arena hosted numerous concerts, circuses, political and religious rallies, basketball, boxing and soccer championships.  It primarily served as the home of the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins and became known as the ‘house that Mario built’.

Cradle of Quarterbacks – ‘The Cradle of Quarterbacks’ was created to tie in with the proud football traditions of the WPIAL in western Pennsylvania.   The region’s once thriving mill towns were where the ethos of football was reflected in the ethics of hard work and dedication which were passed on through the generations.  Those values helped shaped the region into becoming the ‘steel capital of the world’ and had their origins on the gridiron in the Friday night lights of Fall.  Featured here are six high school superstar quarterbacks who went on to have legendary careers in the NFL.  The quarterbacks include Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Joe Montana, George Blanda, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino.

Green Bay Packers – Just as Yankee Stadium is known as the ‘Cathedral of Baseball’ the same can be shared for what Lambeau Field is to football.  Lambeau Field is the home of the NFL Green Bay Packers and opened its gates in 1957.  The field was named for long-time head coach, Curly Lambeau of the Packers.  It was the first modern stadium built for an NFL franchise.  Before that, all NFL teams shared their playing location with their city’s MLB team or at a pre-existing shared facility.  This illustration features the famous Lambeau Field with the Green Bay Packers three legendary quarterbacks, Brett Favre, Bart Starr & the up and coming superstar, Aaron Rodgers.

"Winning Isn’t Everything" – I created this illustration as a reflection of my father & I and a tribute to fathers and sons in sports. It’s the early lessons & teachings in sports that stick with us that can be applied throughout our growing lives. That message is that ‘winning isn’t everything’, be the best you can be & give it your all, that’s all anyone can ask of you.

Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio – Joe DiMaggio, nicknamed “Joltin’ Joe” & “The Yankee Clipper” was one of the greatest baseball players in Major League Baseball history. Dimaggio was a MLB center fielder who spent his entire thirteen year career with the New York Yankees. During his career with the Yankees they won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships and DiMaggio was selected a 3x MVP. DiMaggio is best known for his 56-game hitting streak in the early Summer, 1941 (record which still stands and likely will never be broken). He is among seventeen New York Yankees baseball players to have his number (#5) retired, which occurred on April 18, 1952. DiMaggio was elected to the MLB All-Century Team and into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1955. For this illustration I used a newspaper print filter to get it to resemble the old baseball uniforms of the Golden Age of baseball.

Pittsburgh Sports Broadcasting Legends: Bob Prince, Myron Cope & Mike Lange – Illustration I created honoring three of Pittsburgh’s sports cultural icons. Here in my hometown of Pittsburgh, we are a huge sports town. Win or lose, we love our Steelers, Penguins & Pirates. It’s the only city where all three professional sports teams share the same uniform colors, thus giving meaning to "We Are Family!" Pittsburgh is one of, if not the only city with a museum dedicated solely to its sports history.

We have witnessed some indelible sports memories in the ‘Steel City’ and the greatest legends of baseball, football & hockey. These three broadcasting legends, with their colorful catchphrases & stories were and have been enthralling fans of the black & gold, both young & old for generations. The broadcasting legends from left to right feature the late Bob Prince & Myron Cope & the Penguins current radio broadcaster, Mike Lange.

Bob Prince, known as "The Gunner" was the voice of the Pirates from 1948-75. Myron Cope was the nucleus of the Pittsburgh Steelers & beloved by fans. He served as the voice of the Steelers from 1970-2005 and invented the idea for the Terrible Towel. It is the best known fan symbol in any major pro sports organization. Mike Lange served as the Penguins play-by-play announcer from 1975-2006.

"Hoop Dreams" Aside from football, basketball was and still is one of my favorite sports. This illustration is titled "Hoop Dreams" and features the three basketball stars I grew up with and emulated. I was a big fan of the Boston Celtics with the likes of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge & Robert Parish. During the 80′s there was an intense NBA rivalry between the Celtics & Lakers with each organization winning multiple championships. Then of course there was Michael ‘Air’ Jordan and everyone wanted to be like Mike with his signature moves and enthralling slam dunks.
