“Lighting of the Horne’s Christmas Tree”

Merry Christmas Pittsburgh

The lighting of the Horne’s Christmas tree at its flagship department store remains a long-held family holiday season tradition in Pittsburgh. The six story electric tree placed at the corner of the building at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street continues to be displayed annually in the city as part of Light Up Night. As part of Pittsburgh’s nostalgic past, a trolley strolls past the illuminating light of the tree. With this painted scene, I went with cold-toned colors like you would see on a cold, blustery winter day in the city. In its heyday, trolleys were one of the major sources of transportation for generations of Pittsburghers who worked in the city or would come to the city to do holiday shopping on the weekends. Aside from the Horne’s tree, people were often drawn in by the decorative holiday window displays at Horne’s.

“Light Up Night in Pittsburgh”

Light Up Night is a day-long family festival in the City of Pittsburgh which coincides with the beginning of the Christmas holiday shopping season. The city is decorated with Christmas lights, trees and various holiday decorations. On Light Up Night, the skyscrapers and buildings in and around downtown and the Golden Triangle keep their lights illuminated throughout the night. Light Up Night also features free music, horse carriage rides and a colorful fireworks display.

The lighting of the Christmas tree in the center of PPG Place is an annual tradition which officially opens to the public for the season. The lighting of the Horne’s Christmas tree is also a longstanding tradition along with the Macy’s window displays in the historic Kaufmann’s building. The Wintergarden found inside PPG Place features a model train, gingerbread houses and a collection of life-sized Santa Claus figures in traditional dress representing countries around the world and the proud melting pot of ethnic cultures and traditions here in Pittsburgh.

“The Magic of Christmas”

From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, Pittsburghers have lined up to “oooo” and “ahhh” at the colorful holiday window displays of Gimbel’s, Horne’s and Kaufmann’s. Despite the fact that many of these once bustling department stores have since closed, it is a time-honored annual holiday family tradition that is carried on from generation to generation. The fabulous holiday scenes have captured the imaginations of everyone from the tiniest tots to the top executives of the city’s Fortune 500 companies.

“The Nativity of Jesus”

The Nativity marks the immaculate birth of Jesus in Bethlehem in fulfillment of the divine will of God. The Holy Spirit is symbolic of the “light of life” and the “spirit of mankind” and Jesus is the light of the world. It was God who created light on the first day and the Sun is the fire which gives us life and represents the strength and force of the Holy Spirit in the universe. A cloud is often combined with an image of light to symbolize the God who is hidden and mysterious but also revealing and luminous. One of the most common symbols of the Holy Spirit is the dove which comes from the story of Jesus’ baptism, when Jesus saw the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon Him. Angels have long been considered divine messengers of God and Heaven and they carry the messages between the Creator and His creation. The angel was included in honor of my mother who loved her angels and everything that is memorable of Christmas moments gone by but are carried in the soul forever.

“Snow Covered Bridge”

Featured here is a painting capturing one of Pennsylvania’s many covered bridges set against a wintry background and a hazy shade of winter as a pair of Canadian geese take flight. Pennsylvania has more covered bridges than any state in the country, each with their own characteristic design features and styles.

“The Nutcracker Ballerina Princess”

The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by way of Alexandre Dumas’ adaptive and colorful story “The Nutcracker”. The Nutcracker has enjoyed enormous popularity with countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season since it debuted in St. Petersburg, Russia in December, 1892.
